PRESERVING HISTORY

History of Belle City Square

Founded in1873 by the Horlick brothers, the Horlick Malted Milk Co. became a cornerstone of Racine’s industrial growth. The original factory, built in 1882, expanded to employ over 500 people by the early 1900s. Although operations ceased in 1975, the 16-acre site was revitalized as Belle City Square in 2018 when Milwaukee developer Josh Jeffers purchased the property. The campus has been transformed into a thriving town center while preserving its historical roots, with all 14 buildings being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Belle City Square continues to grow, offering a blend of historic charm with modern amenities.

MALTWORKS inside Belle City Square

MALTWORKS is nestled within the iconic Belle City Square, once home to Horlick Malted Milk Co. The building, once known as the Malt Mill, is a multi-story structure with cream brick exterior, concrete foundation and flat roof. It originally operated as both a grain house and kiln house. Built in circa 1893, and later additions in 1910, its unique layout features two separate wings, three floors, and a garden level. During renovations, special care was taken to preserve the building’s historical character and original Gothic Revival architecture, including replacing the windows to match the original design. Interior access to the Malt Mill was not permitted, but today, MALTWORKS holds 55 mixed-use commercial spaces for small business owners, artists and entrepreneurs. Previously a quiet, closed-off building, now pulses with creativity and welcomes a steady stream of visitors from the community.
